Values

The 'glue' that holds a transition in place includes our faith, our values.  Below are some sites that may be especially helpful; the "descriptions" are from the websites.  You may decide to complete just one exercise, however I would encourage you to try several so that you can see if a pattern emerges for you.  Also, if you are in a significant relationship, I would encourage both of you to try these exercises independently, and then discuss your results.

Barrett Values Centre
Who you are, what you hold dear, what upsets you, and what underlies your decisions, are all connected to your personal values.
Your values reflect what is important to you. They are a shorthand way of describing your motivations. Together with your beliefs, they are the causal factors that drive your decision-making.

Transition Planning
It’s clear that people differ in their values and beliefs, even in the closest of families. So, it’s important that through the transition planning process we understand where we agree and disagree. Values are important and lasting beliefs or ideals about what is good or bad and desirable or undesirable. Values are developed early in life, have major influence on a person’s behavior and attitude, and serve as broad guidelines in all situations.

Values in Action
"Your character strengths are already within you, but isolating and identifying them can be complicated, confusing and incredibly time-consuming. The VIA Me! Character Strengths Profile is designed to help you easily discover the strengths you already have and gain deeper insight into what makes you who you are."

Values Assessment Worksheet
Your “purpose” in life has a lot to do with what kind of impact you want to make in the world and the way you want to live. This is clarified and defined by your values.

Prioritizing Life Values
This site offers a list of 20 life values.  Can you identify your top 5?

Values Card Sort
Previous clients have enjoyed the tactile nature of card sorts.  This site offers a 9-page document, consisting of instructions and pages of value words and phrases that are cut out and then available to 'sort' into one of three categories.

Values Theory
On the academic side, this is a research paper of Shalom Schwartz and his ten basic human values.

I would enjoy hearing from you, and what you thought about the results of your assessment/s and reflections.  Click here.
